JOS, Nigeria — Police in central Nigeria are warning that stealthy, religiously motivated killings taking place around the restive city of Jos will not be tolerated.
Plateau State Police Commissioner Ikechukwu Aduba said Tuesday that more than 30 people have been killed after recent violence left more than 500 people dead. Aduba says the killings come one or two at a time and are of Muslims or Christians who strayed into neighborhoods dominated by the other religion.
More than 200 people — mostly Christians — died in March massacres in villages south of Jos. More than 300 people — mostly Muslims — died in January during rioting in the same region. The fighting, while across the fault line of religion, often involves politics, economics and land.
