Thousands of Yemeni women, their faces covered in religious veils, have demonstrated outside the parliament to oppose proposed legislation banning the marriage of girls under 17.
The protesters held up banners proclaiming "don't ban what Allah made permissible," or "stop violating Islamic sharia law in the name of rights and freedoms," an AFP correspondent said.

Sharia law is held by devout Muslims as having authority from god, via the prophet Mohammad. Secular authority in this context can only come in second place, and in the minds of the true believers, should fall in line with the edicts of Sharia. Naturally, as with any fundamentalist religion this system of beliefs induces a tendency towards theocracy. This trend is inevitable, and frightening.
